Cairns

Where the reef meets the rainforest

📍 Where Is Cairns?

Cairns is located in Australia. Tropical north Queensland's gateway to two World Heritage wonders: the Great Barrier Reef and the ancient Daintree Rainforest. Reef boats leave the marina every morning, the free Esplanade Lagoon is perfect between trips, and Kuranda, Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation are all easy day trips.

Why Visit Cairns?

Cairns is the easiest place in Australia to reach the Great Barrier Reef — reef boats leave from the marina every morning — and it sits right next to the Daintree, the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest on Earth. It's a relaxed tropical city with a free swimming lagoon on the waterfront, and a good base for the Atherton Tablelands, Kuranda's rainforest village and the beaches of Port Douglas.

WHEN TO VISIT

Best Time To Visit Cairns

☀️ June – October

Dry season — warm sunny days, low humidity, calm seas and the best reef visibility.

🪼 November – May

Stinger season — wear the stinger suit provided on reef trips and swim only in netted areas or the lagoon.

🌧️ January – March

The wettest months, with heavy rain and possible cyclones, but waterfalls are at their most spectacular.

💰 Cairns Budget Tips

Day-to-day costs in Cairns are moderate for Australia — the big expense is reef and rainforest tours.

The Esplanade Lagoon is free, patrolled and stinger-safe — Cairns has no swimmable town beach, so it's the best place for a swim between tours.

✈️ Getting To Cairns

Cairns Airport has direct flights from Sydney (about 3 hours), Melbourne, Brisbane and several Asian hubs, and is only about 10 minutes' drive from the city centre. The Spirit of Queensland train runs from Brisbane for travellers with more time, and Port Douglas is roughly an hour's scenic coastal drive north.

📅 Cairns Itinerary — 5 Days

Day 1 — Settle In: Walk the Esplanade boardwalk, swim in the lagoon, and dinner at the marina.

Day 3 — Kuranda: Scenic Railway up, rainforest markets and wildlife sanctuaries, then Skyrail back down.

Day 4 — Daintree: Mossman Gorge, a Daintree River croc cruise, and Cape Tribulation beach.
