Rajasthan is India turned up to maximum colour — pink-washed cities, fortresses built into cliff faces, and palaces that float on lakes. This is the India of camel treks into the Thar Desert, of bazaars selling textiles in every shade imaginable, and of forts so vast they took generations to build. It rewards slow travel: spend longer in fewer cities and the state opens up in a way a rushed circuit never will.
