Time this for sunset specifically, since the changing light dramatically alters the canyon's colours through the evening. Day 2 is for hiking below the rim, and this is the day worth the most caution and planning. The Bright Angel or South Kaibab Trail both descend into the canyon, and you don't need to reach the bottom to get a genuine sense of its scale — even an hour or two below the rim changes the experience considerably from viewpoint-only visits. The critical rule: turn around well before halfway, since the climb back up is significantly harder than the descent, and rangers regularly rescue hikers who underestimated this. Day 3 covers the Desert View Drive, a scenic road heading east along the rim with multiple viewpoints along the way, ending at the Desert View Watchtower. This day moves at a more relaxed, driving-and-stopping pace after the previous day's exertion, and the watchtower itself offers one of the most striking final views before departure. A few practical notes: use the free park shuttle rather than driving between viewpoints, since parking fills fast in peak season and the shuttle removes that stress entirely. Bring far more water than feels necessary — the dry desert air and elevation make dehydration sneak up faster than most visitors expect. And if staying inside the park specifically (rather than nearby Tusayan or Williams), book months ahead, since in-park lodges, particularly the historic El Tovar, sell out well in advance for peak season and holiday weekends.
